Tennen Aku Hakkodate method

Tennen Aku Hakkodate method

After a long time trying to design distinctive Tokushima hanging scrolls that reflect the region’s unique cultural and historical identity, we came up with the idea of incorporating Tokushima’s local indigo dyeing technique called Aizome. Aizome has been commonly used for restoring antique scrolls since ancient times because it repels insects and odors, and is fire-resistant. Our hanging scrolls use high quality silk fabric dyed specially for us by expert dyers who use only natural indigo dye made from Sukumo (fermented indigo leaves) contained in Aigame (traditional ceramic jars used for Aizome). The fabric is then tailored carefully by a certified First-Class Mounting Technician.

Certified First-Class Mounting Technician,
Mr. Satoshi Asano

Mr. Asano is the fifth-generation owner of his family’s business Sumotoriya Asano Sohonten. He became the store’s owner after working at the Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO), where he served as Deputy Manager of their New York office. Mr. Asano meets directly with clients and listens to their requests before carefully creating individually handcrafted scrolls.

Mr. Ranshu Yano

Mr. Yano is a dyer who uses a time-honored technique from Japan’s Edo period (1603-1868) to preserve the traditional Japanese indigo color. The dye is made from fermented natural indigo lye. His dye contains no chemical agents so it is eco-friendly and safe to wear on the human body.

Mounting scroll
with authentic Aizome silk fabric
For the Shikoku Pilgrims
Collect sacred site stamps on your hanging scroll. We can mount the scroll on high quality Kyoto silk fabric dyed with authentic Tokushima Aizome.

Our scrolls use pure silk satin woven in Nishijin, Kyoto and dyed with local Tokushima indigo. Our Aizome fabric uses organic materials that repel insects. It is suitable for mounting mementos from your pilgrimage, such as temple stamps and Miei-fuda (cards with a sacred image of a temple’s principal deity), on a hanging scroll that can be passed down from generation to generation. Our Aizome hanging scrolls can fit any style of interior design.

*The actual Aizome fabric color may appear slightly different from that in the photos. Aizome fabric should naturally fade over time, but the color change is another aspect to be appreciated.
